For reef lovers who enjoy the sun on their back, the Astrolabe Reef also provides a superb Fiji snorkeling experience. Whether exploring one of the island's best fringing reefs right in front of the resort or taking a short boat ride to the main reef itself, you'll be dazzled by the amazing array of corals and fish for which the Astrolabe is famous.

The South and Eastern parts of Kadavu island are protected from the Pacific Ocean by the Great Astrolabe barrier reef , the fourth largest barrier reef in the world. Its remote location has enabled it to maintain its superb condition and its outer reef slopes consist of mile upon mile of pristene hard corals.

The area immediately in front of Matava resort ,including nearby Waya island, with the agreement of our nearby village of Kadavu koro, has been set aside as a marine reserve. Matava resort makes a contribution to the village to compensate villagers for the loss of fishing grounds and the result is a marine sanctuary that offers superb snorkeling to our guests.

The island has three white sand beaches and resort kayaks are available free of charge to guests wishing to spend time on one of the beaches and snorkel in the calm sheltered waters of the marine sanctuary.

The island's fringing coral reefs are in pristene condition with a huge variety of soft and hard corals.

Most, if not all species of marine life seen by our diving guests can be seen in miniature by snorkeling around Waya island.

From seahorses and frogfish in the seagrass flats to lionfish and the ever popular anemomie (Nemo) fish, snorkeling here is rather like taking a dip in a tropical aquarium.

Matava also offers guests the opportunity to snorkel the Great Astrolabe barrier reef by providing boat snorkeling trips on request. Alternatively, guests can go out on one of the resort's dive boats and snorkel from there.
