Treks from Matava Resort

Treks from Matava Resort

Matava Resort is located on the South East side of Kadavu Island, Fiji's fourth largest and least developed of the big four islands. There are no roads on Kadavu and all transport is by village or resort transfer boats.

The resort looks out over the Great Astrolabe barrier reef and offers splendid views of the reef's sheltered turquoise lagoons and coral reefs. Most of the island's villages are connected by bush trails that offer guests the opportunity to trek for miles through the jungle and visit distant villages or waterfalls.

From the resort grounds, trails lead off into the jungle.

Many of the paths exist only as a result of villagers walking between villages. These paths can be challenging in wet weather conditions and are not maintained by anything other than the occasional swipe with a cane knife by a villager walking the trail.

They do however enable guests to get deep into the rainforrest with its myriad of plant and bird life, not to mention spectaculour views.

The easiest short trek that most of our guests enjoy is a one hour walk to nearby Kadavu village and its extraordinary waterfall. The walk begins along the shoreline then tracks inland to the village which lies at the end of a mangrove lined river.

The waterfall cascades into a large pool within the hill, rather like a cave with an open roof. Visitors are usually joined by numerous village kids who scamper about the rockfaces leaping from high up to plunge into the pools amidst raucous laughter from their friends.

The resort deducts F$5 from each guest who visits the waterfall and donates it to the village through the Matava Foundation.

Should you wish to venture further, we can arrange for a guided on day trek to Nacomoto village which takes about 4 hours. The trail offers superb views out over the barrier reef and Pacific Ocean. Upon reaching the village you will meet the village Chief, present him with a 'sevu sevu'(a bundle of dried roots from the kava plant) and be welcomed into the village for lunch.

From there you can trek up into the hills to see an ancient battle ground or visit a waterfall. You are then collected by resort boat or, should you wish, can stay overnight in the village with one of the village families enabling yo to experience an evening of kava drinking with the Chief and village elders.

Matava resort is happy to custom-make guided hikes/kayaking adventures to suit your individual wishes.
